Pahari Bhangjeera is sourced directly from certified organic farmers of Uttarakhand and grown naturally in the upper Himalayan regions. These tiny, greyish, aromatic seeds come from the Perilla frutescens plant and have been an integral part of Garhwali and Kumaoni food traditions for generations. Known for their rich flavour and high nutritional value, bhangjeera seeds are widely used as a spice and in traditional hill cuisine.
Bhangjeera seeds are commonly roasted and ground into a paste, then combined with garlic and green chillies to make a delicious chutney. They can also be mixed with rice, used to prepare flavoured salts with Himalayan rock salt, or pressed to extract oil. Bhangjeera oil is exceptionally rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids and is considered more nutritious and tastier than flax seeds. Traditionally, the oil is used for cooking, medicinal purposes, and even for making pickles. Scientific studies have shown that perilla seed oil contains one of the highest proportions of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, making it a powerful nutritional supplement and a natural alternative to cod liver oil.
