Pahari Jhangora, also known as Barnyard Millet, is sourced directly from certified organic farmers of Uttarakhand and grown naturally at altitudes ranging from 400 to 2,100 meters above sea level. One of the oldest grains known to mankind, Jhangora is often compared to quinoa due to its nutritional richness, yet it remains lighter, more digestible, and lower in calories than most cereals. It is considered one of the least allergenic grains and is especially suitable for people with sensitive digestion.
Jhangora is a rich source of highly digestible protein and dietary fibre and has a low glycemic index, making it an ideal food for diabetics. It is also abundant in essential minerals and phosphorus, which play a vital role in bone health, teeth strength, and cellular metabolism. De-husked Jhangora grains are light brown and oval-shaped, closely resembling quinoa in appearance. Traditionally used during Navratri fasting in Uttarakhand, it provides sustained energy while being light on the stomach. In the hills, it is used to prepare nourishing dishes such as festive kheer and Jhangora ka Chencheda. Extremely versatile, this millet can be cooked like rice or semolina and works beautifully in pilafs, savoury dishes, and desserts. Grown locally and sustainably, Jhangora represents a climate-resilient, eco-friendly food choice for the future.
